Oh, we’ve been in business since 1958, online since 2001 – we sell primarily on ebay, amazon, newegg and our own storefront. I’d just rather have them absorb it as part of manufacturing and exporting to us, rather than us incur additional expenses.

All good points though! For a smaller seller slowing down and ensuring success is the only way. I’m looking at ways to put that money towards other items like a forever subscription to SixBit 🙂

That’s exactly what I just looked at doing – going to contact our manufacturer and see if I can get them to absorb the cost of the UPCs. Thanks!

In our case, we sell hydraulic fittings and we have them made specifically for us by a factory in China, so we have the rights and they are all made under our Trademarked Brand Name. Looking into GS1 a little more, but when I first did it seemed very expensive.

We normally buy from National Barcode and they have this:

Will my barcode work at every store?
Yes…except Krogers, Walmart, JC Penney’s and Macy’s. These retailers require that you provide certificates directly from GS1. We have heard that Lowes, Home Depot and Walgreen’s also asks for the barcode certificate but will optionally input the UPC number of each product. It is your responsibility to ask your retailers if they will accept UPC or an EAN numbers from a company that subdivides barcodes.

We joined WalMart but found many problems with our specific setup. We can do the volume no problem, but our items are imported directly to us from an overseas manufacturer. We do not have UPCs or anything for each product, just our MPN we use on eBay and Amazon (we also have Brand Exemption). This didn’t fly with Walmart and would require us to purchase UPCs from a specific and expensive source (not just any ol’ barcode shop will do for WalMart). What’s odd is others are selling our similar items from different manufacturers and I know there could be a market there.
