Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio

SQL Server 2008 R2 is downloaded and installed the first time you install SixBit. This is the bare minimum required to run the SQL Server database. SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is an add-on to SQL Server that allows users with some database experience to open and view their databases as well as create reports, stored procedures, etc.

If you are having difficulty sharing databases between two computers, having Management Studio installed can be very helpful for support in diagnosing the problem.

In a perfect world, you should be able to download the SSMS upgrade and install it as an add-on to your existing SQL Server 2008 R2 database engine, however, we have found that the Microsoft upgrade to an existing installation seldom works properly.  We recommend instead you uninstall and then reinstall SQL Server with the management tools.

To reinstall, follow the steps in Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 for SixBit.
