Each email provider will require different settings in SixBit. It is impossible to list the settings for all email providers, but as we help users and learn the settings for different providers, we'll add them here in an effort to assist others in the future.

Important (2025): Many providers now require two-step verification and an app-specific password (or “secure mail key”) for third-party apps like SixBit. Where applicable, this is noted below.(Mailtrap)

If you have working settings for your email provider, please feel free to send along your settings to support@sixbitsoftware.com for inclusion in this list.

Provider: AOL
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.aol.com
Logon Using SPA: Unchecked
Mail server requires SSL Encryption: Checked
Outgoing mail server port: 465 (if that fails, try 587)

Note: AOL now expects encryption and may require that you enable 2-step verification and generate an app password for use in SixBit instead of your normal account password.(Mailtrap)

Legacy Outgoing Mail Server (no longer recommended): smtp.yahoo.com

  3. Turn on two-step verification if it isn’t already enabled.

  4. In the “App passwords” section, choose Generate app password, select an app (e.g., “Other”), and generate the code.

General tips for SixBit SMTP setup (2025):

  • Username is almost always your full email address.

  • SPA (Secure Password Authentication) should generally remain Unchecked unless your provider specifically says otherwise (most do not).

  • If a provider offers both 465 and 587, start with the port listed above as “primary,” then try the alternate if you hit connection issues.

  • When in doubt, check your provider’s current help pages for any changes to app-password, 2FA, or SMTP AUTH requirements.
